Revanth Reddy Announces Hyderabad As Sole Capital Of Telangana

HYDERABAD: Hyderabad, one of the country’s busiest metropolitan cities, ceased to be the combined capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on June 2 (Sunday), according to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act of 2014. Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy announced that Hyderabad will be the sole capital of Telangana from June 2 on the occasion of Telangana Formation Day.

Hyderabad became the capital city of both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for 10 years following the bifurcation of undivided Andhra Pradesh in 2014. Telangana was officially formed on June 2, 2014, as recalled by CM Revanth Reddy.

“On and from the appointed day (June 2), Hyderabad in the existing state of Andhra Pradesh shall be the common capital of the state of Telangana and the state of Andhra Pradesh for a period not exceeding ten years,” said the AP Reorganisation Act.

“After the expiration of the specified period in sub-section (1), Hyderabad will become the capital of the State of Telangana, and a new capital will be established for the State of Andhra Pradesh,” it added.

The formation of the Telangana State fulfilled a decades-long demand. Statehood was achieved on June 2, 2014, following the passage of the AP Reorganisation Bill in Parliament in February 2014.

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy last month instructed officials to take over buildings like the Lake View government guest house in Hyderabad, which were given to Andhra Pradesh for a period of 10 years after June 2.

Despite ten years of separation, several issues, like asset division, remain unresolved between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

The government of Telangana had planned to address matters concerning the division of the state in a cabinet meeting. However, this plan did not come to fruition as the Election Commission reportedly did not approve it due to the ongoing model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections.
