The Demise of the Oldest Tortoise in Nehru Zoological park

HYDERABAD: A 125-year-old Galapagos Giant Tortoise died on Saturday at  Zoo Park in Hyderabad due to aged-related health problems.

The Investigation into the Galapagos Giant Tortoise’s Death

The tortoise had been off feed for the past 10 days, and the Zoo Veterinary team, led by Dr. M. A. Hakeem, Deputy Director (Vet.) at NZP-Hyd, had been providing treatment during this time.

Regarded as one of the oldest inhabitants of the zoo, along with a 95-year-old colleague, the tortoise has been a star attraction since the zoo’s inauguration.

Originally housed at Public Gardens (Bagh-E-Aam), the tortoise was relocated to Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad in 1963. The tortoise underwent a postmortem examination conducted by Dr. M. A. Hakeem, Dr. D. Madhuri, Dr. D. Swathi, Dr. Y. Laxman, Dr. G. Shambhulingam, and Dr. K.Y. Subhash.

The  Galapagos Giant Tortoise died in zoo due to multiple organ failure, according to the initial postmortem report, and the samples have been submitted to the Veterinary Biological and Research Institute (VBRI) and the Veterinary College in Rajendranagar for further investigation.

The curator and the zoo staff expressed their deep condolences on the demise of Galapagos Giant Tortoise.
