Nightlife in Hyderabad’s Old City, Charminar declines due to early closures

Nightlife in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: Night tourism in Hyderabad’s old city has taken a hit due to strict enforcement by the police, leading to early closures of hotels and commercial establishments. This crackdown has significantly affected the nightlife in the area around Charminar area, causing locals and tourists to reconsider visiting the old city after 10 pm.

Until a month ago, the Charminar area thrived with activity late into the night. Businessman Syed Jameel recalls the bustling environment, now subdued by the police’s stringent measures following a series of murders in the city. He criticizes the police for prioritizing closures over the government’s plans to promote night tourism.

The circulation of gruesome videos depicting public killings and police thrashing innocent daily wagers has heightened public unease. Mohiuddin, a trader, complains that the perception of night restrictions has deterred people from other parts of the city, adversely impacting local businesses.

Previously, shops around Charminar stayed open until midnight, with groups of youngsters and couples frequenting the area despite police patrols. Nooruddin, a hotel manager, laments the current situation, noting the absence of visitors after 11:30 pm and questioning the authorities’ intentions regarding the old city’s image.

Social activists argue that the police’s overzealous actions are tarnishing the old city’s reputation. Mohd Akram, a social worker from Moghalpura, highlights the significant positive change over the past decade, where the old city became safer and more welcoming. However, he warns that the recent restrictions are reversing this progress, making the old city a ‘no-visit’ zone for outsiders.

A senior police official in Hyderabad’s south zone justifies the tough stance, emphasizing the need to ensure citizens’ safety and security. He cites recent incidents where criminals targeted innocent people over minor issues, advocating for people to stay indoors after midnight for their protection.

The stringent measures have sparked debate among residents and business owners about balancing safety concerns with the need to maintain the area’s vibrant nightlife. As authorities continue to prioritize security, the impact on Hyderabad’s old city night tourism remains a point of contention.
