Open manhole in Jubilee Hills MLA Colony poses safety threat

Jubilee Hills Open Manhole

Hyderabad: An open manhole in the MLA Colony of Jubilee Hills has emerged as a major safety hazard for commuters. Residents report frequent accidents due to the uncovered opening. The issue has persisted for the past two months, causing frustration among residents who have taken to social media demanding a swift resolution.

The open manhole poses a significant risk to both pedestrians and motorists. Local authorities are urged to take immediate action to close the manhole and prevent further accidents.

Commuters expressed their concerns on a social media platform known as ‘X’ (formerly Twitter). Donthu Ramesh, a resident who frequently uses the road, highlighted the problem in a post, stating, “This is the plight of MLAs Colony Road for the last two months. One or two accidents happen every day due to this careless leaving of the manhole without closing it. Repair immediately, please.”

Another user urged the authorities to take responsibility and pointed out that the manhole falls under the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) jurisdiction. They requested the Deputy Commissioner, Zone 10B, and their team to address the issue promptly.

It was learned that Hyderabad Water Board officials have recently warned that strict action will be taken if manholes in the city’s roads and other areas are opened. The instructions are given during the rainy season to avoid untoward incidents. With the onset of the rainy season, the water board is gearing up with precautionary measures.

It is pertinent to note that it is an offense under HMWSSB ACT – 1989, Section 74, for any citizen or unauthorized person to open or remove the lid of manholes without the authorities’ permission. “Strict action will be taken if you violate this and commit such acts. A criminal case will be registered against such people. In addition to fines, the accused may be jailed in some cases,” said the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB).

If any manhole cover is damaged or found to be open or any other problems or complaints should be reported by calling Water Board’s Complaint number 155313.
