Health Minister Raja Narasimha orders strict action against food safety violators

HYDERABAD: Telangana Health Minister C. Damodar Raja Narasimha emphasized the need for Telangana to become a model state for food safety in a high-level review meeting held at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Telangana State Secretariat. The Minister directed stringent actions against food business operators neglecting regulations and quality standards.

Minister Raja Narasimha expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of food safety officials within the GHMC limits and urged them to improve their work. He highlighted the importance of constant surveillance by food inspection teams across the state.

Comprehensive food safety measures

The Minister instructed officials to collect and test approximately 180 to 200 food samples daily through mobile food labs. He stressed that government hostels, private boarding residential schools, bakeries, dairy food manufacturers, restaurants, and packaged food producers must register for FSSAI licenses. This step aims to ensure that students’ health is not compromised.

Minister Raja Narasimha insisted on strict enforcement of the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSS) – 2006, urging officials to take firm action against those failing to meet the required quality standards. He also called for continuous task forces, mobile food lab operations, surprise inspections, and awareness seminars.

The Minister ordered that every Saturday, food safety officials must provide detailed reports on tests conducted by mobile food labs. He also emphasized taking precautions to prevent food and water contamination, especially during the upcoming monsoon season.

In the meeting, Minister Raja Narasimha directed officials to conduct awareness seminars with food business operators and provide necessary training on food safety. The goal is to ensure that Telangana consistently offers quality food products, setting an example for other states.

Prominent attendees at the review meeting included Government Secretary of Health and Medical Department, Smt. Christina, State Food Safety Commissioner R.V. Karnan, IPM Director Dr. Shiva Leela, Head of State Food Labs Lakshminarayana Reddy, Assistant Food Controllers (GHMC) Amrutha Sri and Balaji Raju, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Padmaja, and Joint Commissioner Health A. Shailaja. They discussed various strategies to enhance food safety standards and compliance across the state.
