University of Hyderabad tops in 7 Subjects in QS World Rankings 2024
HYDERABAD: The University of Hyderabad (UoH) has been named as one of the world’s top universities for the study of 7 subjects, according to the latest edition of the world’s most-consulted university rankings.
The 2024 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, released by global higher education analyst QS Quacquarelli Symonds, names the world’s best universities for the study of 54 academic disciplines.
This year UoH featured in 7 subjects compared to 5 last year. They are – the Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Economics & Econometrics, English Language Literature, Linguistics, Performing Arts and Physics & Astronomy.
This year Economics & Econometrics, Linguistics and Performing Arts subjects have been included in the rankings with Performing Arts ranked the best for UoH in the band 101-120.
Reacting to the rankings, Prof. BJ Rao, Vice Chancellor, UoH, said “We are elated that the University is constantly figuring in the QS World Rankings by Subject. In fact, this year we have added three more subjects, out of which Performing Arts has outshined with a rank band of 101-120. I am proud of this achievement and congratulate the fraternity of the schools/departments which have figured in the rankings.However, the University needs to work towards adding more subjects into this august list.”
The 2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject compiled by global higher education experts QS Quacquarelli Symonds, provide independent comparative analysis on the performance of more than 16,400 individual university programmes, taken by students at 1500+ universities which can be found in 95 countries and territories, across 56 academic disciplines and five broad faculty areas (Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences). The fourteenth edition of the rankings highlights India’s substantial progress in the academic domain. A total of 69 Indian universities made it to the rankings with 424 entries, which marks a 19.4 percent rise from the previous year’s 355 entries. Impressively, 72 percent of the Indian entries this year are either new to the list, have shown improvement, or have maintained their positions, whereas a mere 18 percent experienced a decline. Overall, India has demonstrated a significant 17 percent year-on-year improvement. In the broader Asian regional context, India secures the second spot in terms of the number of universities featured (69), trailing only behind Mainland China (101), and holds the fourth position in the total number of ranked entries, (454), after China (1041), Japan (510), and South Korea (499). India ranks fifth regionally for the number of top 200 entries and sixth for the number of top 100 entries.
QS uses five key metrics to compile the subject rankings. Reputation indicators are based on the responses of 150,000 academics and 99,000 employers to QS surveys while Citations per Paper and H-Index measure research impact and productivity.

In H-Index, which also measures research impact and productivity, University of Hyderabad performs best in Economics, in which it scores 60
