Jubilee Hills, Chandrayangutta top in duplicate votes in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: In Hyderabad, a significant issue has emerged with the discovery of around 5 lakh duplicate votes, prompting the Election Commission of India to undertake a massive cleanup of electoral rolls. Over the past two years, the commission has deleted approximately 32.8 lakh voters from the list to maintain the integrity of the electoral process in Telangana that include 5.4 lakh votes in Hyderabad city.

The Chief Electoral Officer, Vikas Raj, has reported the addition of about 60.6 lakh new voters during the same period. The cleanup operation has been extensive, with the objective of identifying and removing duplicate votes, deceased voters, and individuals who have relocated.

Jubilee Hills has been identified as the area with the highest number of duplicate votes, totaling 60,953. This figure includes 3,101 deceased voters and 53,012 who have moved away. Chandrayangutta is not far behind, with 59,289 duplicate votes, followed by Yakutpura with 48,296.

Top Duplicate Votes

In the Old City, five constituencies, including Chandrayangutta, Yakutpura, Nampally, Malakpet, and Bahadurpura, have been noted for a combined total of 2.29 lakh bogus votes. These figures are part of the larger count of 5.4 lakh duplicate votes found across 15 constituencies in the Hyderabad district. Hyderabad, in particular, has shown a 10% duplicate voter rate among its 45 lakh voters.

Secunderabad Cantonment has the dubious distinction of having the highest number of deceased voters, with 6,503 cases. Nampally and Karwan follow with 5,886 and 4,478 deceased voters, respectively. Chandrayangutta also tops the list for the number of voters who have shifted residences, with a count of 53,750.

In response to these findings, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner and District Election Officer, Ronald Rose, has taken strict action against officials who were absent from mandatory training classes. A criminal case has been booked against 10 such personnel.
The GHMC has been actively involved in the purification of electoral rolls, with 4,500 officials participating in the effort from January 1, 2023, to March 15, 2024. The process has included verification of reports regarding dead voters and the subsequent deletion of these entries from the voter list.

The election authorities have also focused on enhancing the representation of women voters and have included a significant number of young voters, with 9.1 lakh individuals in the 18 to 19 age group now on the electoral rolls.
