Safilguda’s closed railway gate worsens commuting and health woes

Safilguda railway gate closure

Malkajgiri: It has been more than one and half year since Safilguda Railway Level Crossing – 254 has been closed for commuters. This has resulted in significant commuting woes and has been bone of contention for the residents of surrounding areas of Safilguda. Over 6000 residents living in 10 colonies were affected due to the closure of the railway gate which is in limbo with railway and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials.

Speaking to Hyderabad Mail, D Ramakrishna, president of West Krishna Nagar colony welfare association, Safilguda said “With Closure of LC 254, residents were forced to take a detour about 3 Kms and is taking more than 20 Minutes just to reach the other side of the track. This detour poses serious risks during health emergencies, as it delays access to hospitals in Secunderabad”.

What began as a temporary shutdown for repairs has evolved into a prolonged issue, forcing residents to take a lengthy detour. Further narrating the origins of their apathy, Ramakrishna said, “Initially the level crossing gate was closed under the pretext of some repair work. With the time passing it was not opened later we got to know that it was completely closed for the users. We went into an utter shock.”

The road is the lifeline of many residents as it is the the nearest route to reach secunderabad via AOC from Safilguda. Resident over a dozen colonies- West Sri Krishna Nagar Colony, Safilguda, Balaramnagar, Seetharam Nagar, Devi Nagar, Sanik Nagar, RK Puram Village, Siddartha Nagar, Aadharsh nagar, Bhagathsing Nagar, East Sri Krishna Nagar, Ramabhramham Nagar, New Vidhya Nagar, Indhira Nehru Nagar – had to bear the brunt of closure.

Despite repeated appeals to local and national government officials, including MP and Cabinet Minister G. Kishan Reddy and then Malkajgiri MP Anumula Revanth Reddy, a viable solution has yet to be implemented. Earlier Residents have reached out to Member of Parliament and Cabinet Minister G. Kishan Reddy. He shot a letter addressed to South Central Railways to provide a solution. However it didn’t yield any fruitful result. Further residents also reached out to present Chief Minister the then Malkajgiri MP Anumula Revanth Reddy, following which, he sent a letter to Railways to help the residents with an alternative solution for the closure of the gate. Now they are hopeful that as he is in a position of power he might help them.

Residents, represented by local leaders, are now urging for the construction of an underpass to alleviate these issues and ensure timely access for emergency services. “Our only request is that as the distance and travel time is causing a major issue in case of any emergency health issues to reach hospitals in Secunderabad which is a life threatening problem. We are requesting to construct an underpass so that emergency vehicles like ambulances and some small vehicles can pass and shorten the travel time,” added Ramakrishna.

Public representatives response

Malkajgiri Corporator Vurapalli Sravan said that recently met GHMC Chief Engineer Devanand regarding the issue of Safilguda Railway Gate. Speaking to Hyderabad mail regarding the same, Sravan said, “I have discussed the issue with the officials of Municipal Administration and Urban department. Further sought a letter stating that they have no objection for the Railway Board to take up the construction of the underpass/tunnel. They expressed their willingness and assured us to send a no-objection letter to railway officials.”

“I have taken up the issue with the Malkajgiri MP Etala Rajendar. Hoping for a positive response,” ends Sravan.
