HYDERABAD: According to official sources, Hyderabad Regional Ring Road (RRR) project reportedly set to begin in this October. Prime Minister Narendra Modi to set the groundwork for this much-anticipated project. As a result of the delays, the project’s expenses have increased by Rs 6k crore. The government of BRS did not succeed in obtaining the required lands even after multiple reminders from the Centre during the last five years. RRR project was originally suggested by the BRS administration in 2018. This project was given the green light in the same year by the Centre, which agreed to cover half of the expenses for acquiring the land.

The Centre approved the RRR project in two sections: northern and southern. The northern part, spanning 158 km, will connect Sangareddy, Narsapur, Toopran, Gajwel, Pragnapur, Jagdevpur, Bhongir, and Choutuppal. The southern section, in its second phase, will cover 182 km, passing through Choutuppal, Ibrahimpatnam, Kandukur, Amangal, Chevella, Shankarpally, and Sangareddy.

In December 2021, the Centre estimated Rs 9,164 crore to complete the northern section, including land acquisition. However, delays have pushed the cost to Rs 15k crore due to rising land prices and increased costs of steel, cement, and utility relocations.

Government efforts to accelerate project

After the Congress came to power in December 2023, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy prioritized the RRR project. In January, he held a review meeting and directed officials to accelerate land acquisition. However, the election code from March 16 to June 6 halted progress. The BRS government had initiated the process to acquire only 1,459 acres out of the required 1,935 hectares, and this remains at various stages of acquisition.

Following the conclusion of the Lok Sabha elections, Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy accelerated land acquisition and related works for the RRR project. Efforts aim to complete land acquisition by September and invite Prime Minister Modi for the groundbreaking ceremony in October, marking the formal launch of the RRR works.
