Is Neknampur Lake Dumping Spot For Manikonda Municipality

HYDERABAD: The Manikonda Municipality has allegedly been dumping its waste into the restored and meticulously maintained Neknampur Lake. This concerning revelation was brought to light by Madhulika, the Founder of Dhruvansh Organization.

Over the past two years, NITI Aayog has recognized Neknampur Lake as an exemplary model of restoration and maintenance, attributed to the efforts of Dhruvansh Organization, founded by Madhulika S Chowdary, without any government assistance.

Madhulika, Founder of Dhruvansh Organization, said, “Since 2016, we have not only restored and maintained Neknampur Lake but also planted one lakh trees, elevating it to a national-level lake without any government support. However, we do require basic assistance, particularly in garbage collection. We regularly organize cleanups, and it is only fair to expect the Municipality to dispose of the garbage we collect. This is the least we anticipate from the Municipality.

“Our organization has implemented various measures, such as floating aerators and floating treatment wetlands, in the lake. Despite eight years of dedicated work from 9 to 5 to ensure the sustainable restoration and maintenance of the lake post-cleanup, a specific area remains neglected. This area falls under the jurisdiction of three municipalities: Narsingi Municipality, Manikonda Municipality, and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Organization. Regrettably, none of these municipalities have taken the initiative to clean this part of the lake, a situation that has persisted for the last five years,” added Madhulika.

“Today, we witnessed Manikonda Municipality dumping garbage in the surrounding areas of the restored lake. Last year, we also caught Narsingi Municipality doing the same. I have informed GHMC several times about this issue, but they have not taken any action to clean up our area. As a result, Manikonda Municipality and Narsingi Municipality are taking advantage of the situation by dumping their garbage in the GHMC area to keep their own areas clean. They are not taking responsibility for the garbage in the GHMC area. Telangana State Pollution Control Board must take action on such cases,” said Madhulika.

The founder of Dhruvansh claims that the garbage truck was parked in the Manikonda Municipality region and was dumping the garbage. “The CCTV cameras revealed it was disposing of debris in the GHMC area. We will be keeping an eye on everything, and we have asked a private firm to install cameras around the lake,” Madhulika said.
