Hyderabad: The Bowenpally Police have apprehended an offender for snatching a breathalyzer from traffic police while they were conducting drunk-driving tests.
The accused individual has been identified as 27-year-old Kothaplli Sravan Kumar, also known as Sunny, son of Kothaplli Rajesham, a car driver from Ramagundam, Karim Nagar district.
The recovered items from the accused include one alcohol breath analyzer machine and a Tata Zest four-wheeler with registration number TG-22-T-0365.
According to the police, Bowenpally Traffic Police were conducting drunk-driving checks at Pulla Reddy Building, Traffic Point, New Bowenpally, on June 27, 2024, following orders from senior officers.
During an inspection of a Swift Dzire car around 00:50 hours, when the Breathalyzer Alcohol Sensor (BAS) test was being conducted on the driver, Kothaplli Sravan Kumar, also known as Sunny, suddenly pushed the police officer on duty. He forcibly snatched the breath analyzer and fled in his car.
A case has been registered at Bowenpally Police Station under Cr no 409/2024, citing Sections 353, 356, and 379 of the IPC for the incident.
The public of North Zone, Hyderabad, is advised to cooperate with police authorities during drunk-driving checks and other initiatives to ensure a safer society for all.
In another incident on June 10, Bowenpally police arrested three thieves and seized 14 two-wheelers, 4 duplicate vehicle registration certificates, and one laptop, worth a total of eight lakh rupees, on Monday.
The accused have been identified as Raazak Khan, 38, who was employed as a bike mechanic and resided in Qutubullapur; Yammala Yohanu, 29, who worked as a car driver and native of Eluru Mandal, Andhra Pradesh; and Goriparthi Venkatappayya, 28, who was employed at a Xerox center and resided in Machilipatnam Mandal, Andhra Pradesh.
The police stated that the accused, Raazak Khan and Yohanu, used to live in Suraram of Qutubullapur and Hafeezpet of Miyapur and are friends. They are facing financial difficulties due to their various addictions. To make quick money, they planned to commit property offenses. Specifically, their plan involved stealing bikes starting from October 2023. The police revealed that they intended to target areas such as Bowenpally, Trimulgherry, Nampally, Jeedimetla, Alwal, and other Hyderabad and Cyberabad Commissionerate regions.
The police have reported that the thieves were targeting residential areas during the early morning hours, specifically between 3:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. They would steal bikes and leave them near the crime scene for one or two days before returning to collect them. This strategy allowed them to avoid police patrols, added the police.
The police stated that the stolen bikes were sold on OLX to unsuspecting buyers for Rs. 10,000 to 15,000. To meet the buyers’ demands for the original registration documents, the culprits sought the help of A-3 Goriparthi Venkatappayya, who runs a DTP center in Gollapalem Village, Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh. The police said that duplicate vehicle registration certificates were prepared at this location.
According to the police, the A-3 used a laptop to obtain the owners’ information from the RTA website and then sent the information to A-1 and A-2. They charged Rs. 1500 for each document. After obtaining duplicate RCs, A-1 and A-2 sold the vehicles through platforms like OLX and other means.

Lakshmi Narayana Reddy, Station House Officer (SHO) of Bowenpally, along with their team, apprehended the suspects under the supervision of P. Gopala Krishna Murthy, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Begumpet Division, and P. Ashok, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, North Zone.
