Interstate cheating gang nabbed; police seize Rs. 27 crores worth demonetized Turkish currency

LB NAGAR: The Special Operations Team (SOT) of LB Nagar and LB Nagar police, in a joint operation on Thursday, apprehended an interstate gang involved in cheating. The five gang members were attempting to sell demonetized Turkish currency notes at a lower price.

The seized property includes 99 demonetized Turkish currency notes of LIRA 10 Lakh denomination each, equivalent to Rs. 27 Crores in Indian currency.

The main accused, Manchineella Om Naga Prasad, had possessed the Turkish currency for eight years, attempting to exchange it at lower rates. The gang decided to collaborate and purchased walkie-talkies for internal communication.

On reliable information, the SOT LB Nagar Team, along with LB Nagar police, apprehended the five accused near Vijayawada bus stop, Chinthalkunt, LB Nagar, and seized 99 demonetized Turkish currency notes with a denomination of LIRA Rs. 10 lakh and other incriminating material from their possession on January 25, 2024.

The operation was conducted under the supervision of G. Sudheer Babu, Commissioner of Police, Rachakonda, and the guidance of K. Muralidhar, DCP, SOT, LB Nagar-Maheshwaram, along with SOT and LB Nagar police personnel. Legal action is underway.
