Public outcry over water taxes as Hyderabad faces severe supply issues

Hyderabad Water Supply Issues

Hyderabad: The Congress party’s current governance has allegedly led to several taxes on drinking water, causing public discontent. Previously, former Chief Minister KCR in Telangana provided free clean water statewide through the Free Drinking Water Supply Scheme. These changes have sparked debate and concern in different areas.

While speaking with Hyderabad Mail, Vasavi, a resident of Dummaiguda, said, “There are ongoing challenges in accessing potable water. Since February, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board has only provided a limited water supply, approximately four to five minutes, and even then, only half of the container is filled. Furthermore, Vasavi and her neighbors did not receive water bills for four consecutive months, followed by an unexpected charge of Rs. 12,000.”

Vasavi said that despite their efforts to fill water using borewells and raising complaints, the issue has not been properly addressed. The lack of response from the corporator, who used to make promises before elections, has left them feeling ignored and their problem unresolved.

Ramadevi, a resident of Malkajgiri, pointed out the excessive amount of water they have been receiving for the past four months. This surplus water, beyond their needs, is causing significant wastage. Even when they try to use more water, it still overflows, leading to road floods and wastage of drinking water. This situation calls for immediate action to prevent further wastage.

On January 12, 2021, former Telangana minister KT Rama Rao inaugurated the 20 KL Free Drinking Water Supply Scheme at SPR Hills, Rehmat Nagar, Hyderabad. Several ministers and representatives attended the event. This significant initiative has brought about positive change, impacting over 9 lakh households in the city by providing access to free drinking water.
