Hyderabad police arrests five accused in Amit Shah doctored video case, gets bail

NAMPALLY: Hyderabad Cybercrime police arrested five persons who circulated the edited video of Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, where he was seen delivering a speech, during his election campaign at a public meeting at Siddipet, Telangana. The doctored video gained huge traction and went viral on social media. A case was registered by Delhi police in connection with the same and Delhi police issued summons for Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy as well in this regard.

The arrested persons were identified as Pendyala Vamshi Krishna, Manne Sathish, Pettam Naveen, Asma tasleem and Koya Geetha all hailing from Hyderabad. All the accused work in the Telangana Pradesh Congress Party social media unit.

Amitshah Doctored Video Accused

On 23 April, 2024, during a public meeting in Medak, Home Minister Amit Shah made a speech. Allegedly, the congress leaders shared a doctored video of Union Home Minister, Amit Shah. While in the original video, Amit Shah was talking about the removal of reservations for the muslim community and in the altered video, it appeared to seem like, Amit Shah told to remove reservations for the SC, ST and OBC communities. This edited video went viral and allegedly Telangana congress X (formerlyTwitter) handles and other leaders have also reshared this video from their accounts.

Violated Model Code of Conduct

Preliminary Investigation suggests that the accused monitor social media posts related to political parties and upload them on their official and personal X (formerlyTwitter) handles. “Pendyala Vamshi Krishna received a doctored video of the Amit Shah speech in Whatsapp. He uploaded it on the “@INCTelangana” Twitter handle and shared it in various WhatsApp groups. Subsequently, other accused saw the video and further shared it to their individual twitter handles. When notified by X(formerlyTwitter) about sensitive content, they deleted it. Thus they violated the Model Code of Conduct” said Hyderabad cyber crime police in an official statement.

On 27 April, Hyderabad cyber crime police received a complaint from G. Premender Reddy, BJP State General Secretary alleging that the Telangana Congress Pradesh Congress Party in its Twitter account posted morphed/fabricated video of Amit Shah,Union Home Minister. Further the complaint alleged “The act of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Party President and their social media in morphing/fabricating Amit Shah speech and committed offense under the I.T. Act. The deliberate and mischievous act is aimed at misleading the people and voters creating fear amongst the OBC communities”.

Hyderabad cyber crime police registered a case in under sections 469(Forgery for purpose of harming reputation), 505(1)C(Statements conducing to public mischief) ,171 G(False statements), 502(2)(Sale of printed or engraved substance containing defamatory matter) of Indian penal code(IPC) and Sec 125 RP Act 1951( Promoting enmity between classes in connection with election). Further investigation is underway.

Meanwhile Hyderabad Cyber crime police produced the accused before Local Court at Nampally, Hyderabad.The court gave bail with following conditions-Rs.10,000 each with two sureties and the accused persons have to attend before the investigation officer on Monday and Friday till further orders.
