Excise officials seize Rs.2 crores worth opium disguised in clothes in Hyderabad

CHARMINAR: Prohibition and excise department officials, Shamshabad unveiled an opium syndicate and seized around Rs. 2 crores worth of opium which is being smuggled into Hyderabad under the camouflage of clothes on Thursday.

In joint operation District Task Force, Prohibition and Excise team and SHO Shamshabad jointly apprehended the accused Dala Ram at Babul reddy nagar, Katedan, Rajendra Nagar under the limits of Shamshabad Excise station. The accused was clandestinely smuggling the contraband opium from Rajasthan.

The Excise officials intercepted the Four wheeler bound to Hyderabad from Rajasthan. Upon checking the officials found Opium- 2.3 Kgs, Opium Poppy Powder- 29 kgs, Opium Poppy Straw (Husk) – 44 Kgs , Mixed tobacco and poppy straw powder- (1000) kgs and seized the contraband. The officials pegged the worth of seized contraband at Rs 1. 73 crores.

According to the excise officials, the accused Dala Ram got addicted to consuming narcotics and later started procuring from his native state Rajasthan and supplying the same to local PAN masala manufacturer Azad in Katedan and thus earning easy money by illegal means.

Opium is being supplied to various gutka factories

Preliminary investigation revealed that Dala Ram bought the Opium, Poppy powder and Poppy straw (Husk) from his native place in Rajasthan. “Later, came in contact with Azad (in Hyderabad ) and he started procuring Opium at low rate Rs 1500/10 grams,and selling the same to the customers at double the price Rs.3,000/10 grams and transport the Opium from Rajasthan to Hyderabad by concealing them in clothes and travel in his Bolero vehicle” said Excise officials in a statement.

Further the officials are probing the main source of opium and identify the consumers in Hyderabad. The officials are collecting the incriminating evidence against Dala Ram and efforts are made to apprehend the absconding accused.

Excise officials appealed to the public and students that procuring, selling, transportation and consumption of the banned Narcotics substances and drugs is a crime and punishable for imprisonment for a period of 10 years and also death, according to Section 31A of the NDPS Act.
