Ethiopian Airlines faces compensation order over cancelled flights

Ethiopian Airlines

HYDERABAD: A passenger named Satish Patangay from Secunderabad booked four tickets on Ethiopian Airlines in July 2020. Satish paid a total of ₹2 lakh for the total four tickets, with each costing around ₹51 thousand.

Satish planned a visit to Kilimanjaro from Hyderabad. Due to COVID-19, flights are cancelled between this route. Then Ethiopian Airlines issued them four vouchers of worth ₹51 thousand each, which are valid till July 2021. Airlines issued vouchers instead of granting request for refund.

Despite considering the consumer’s request for refund, the Ethiopian Airlines again renewed the vouchers until June 2022. When Satish re-planned the visit to Kilimanjaro in 2023, the flight ticket cost had reached to ₹96k per ticket, which is ₹1.8 lakh more than total previous charge. Remaining ₹2 lakh is reimbursed through the vouchers given by Airlines.

The District Consumer Redressal Commission – II Hyderabad has directed Ethiopian Airlines to refund ₹2 lakh and pay ₹50k as compensation for causing mental agony, along with ₹10k towards case costs. Which in total sums to ₹2.6 lakh refund.
