HYDERABAD: The residents of Suleman Nagar in Diamond City Colony in Chintalmet are grappling with an urgent and significant garbage problem. The absence of proper dustbins has triggered mosquito breeding and environmental deterioration due to plastic waste. Moreover, the entire Suleman Nagar ward is devoid of dustbins and suffers from poor road conditions, with muddy roads exacerbating the situation.

The residents have been enduring this issue for months, even before the lockdown, emphasising the need for a sustainable solution. Another area, Rajendranagar, a prominent colony, is also facing the same problem.

Syed, a committed resident and passionate social activist, recently brought to light a troubling issue in an interview with the Hyderabad Mail. He revealed that a considerable number of small-scale industries are operating without proper licenses and are irresponsibly disposing of their waste in the neighborhood. The waste includes plastic, sofa cushion remnants, and wood dust, all of which significantly contribute to the accumulation of filth on the streets.

11“I filed a complaint with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), and they acknowledged it on Twitter. A GHMC officer visited the site, placed some barricades at the muddy spot, took some photos, and then left. They assured me on Twitter that the issue would be resolved soon. However, no GHMC authority came to resolve the issue. It seems like the GHMC is just putting on a show on Twitter without actually making any changes,” said the social activist.

There should be a garbage collection truck that visits each home to collect the garbage. It is the government’s duty, but nobody comes to our homes, and no dustbins are provided for us. Consequently, residents are resorting to throwing garbage on the streets, which is causing a significant increase in littering issues, as revealed by the social activist.

According to Syed, most GHMC officials are avoiding work under the guise of election duties. They seem to be in relaxation mode while on election duty in the city.

“I urge the officials of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation to take immediate action to address the issue of waste dumping in our area. The foul smell and air pollution are distressing the residents. Please consider providing a dustbin for our area to help alleviate this problem,” said Syed.
