‘Fabricated narratives by BJP’ : ASA reacts on Rohit Vemula report by police

Asa Protests Rohit Vemula Report

Gachibowli: In a backlash to the final report submitted by Cyberabad police who are investigating the Rohit Vemula abetment to suicide case, Ambedkar Student Association(ASA) called for protest in the University of Hyderabad campus on Friday. Terming the report as “replicated fabricated narratives by BJP and ABVP’, ‘make grave insinuations’, ‘character assassinate Rohith’ alleges ASA, student organization of University of Hyderabad.

In a statement released by ASA said, “To our great shock, dismay and disappointment, the report completely absolves the then Vice-Chancellor Podile Appa Rao, BJP leaders Bandaru Dattatreya, Smriti Irani and N Ramachandra Rao and ABVP Leader Susheel Kumar of any responsibility for the murder of Rohith Vemula by replicating the exact narratives fabricated by the BJP and the ABVP.”

It further goes on to make grave insinuations about the victims themselves and goes to great trouble to insinuate that Rohith Vemula was not a Dalit but had forged documents to create fake caste certificates. The police report stated that “the deceased(Rohit Vemula) himself is aware that he does not belong to Scheduled Caste and that his mother got him SC certificate. This could be one of the constant fears as the exposure [of] the same would put him to loss of his academic degrees that he earned over the years and be compelled to face prosecution”.

Reacting to the police report, ASA said, “There cannot be a greater insult to the life and legacy of Rohit Vemula than this insinuation. It also reveals the fact that the investigation views Dalitness simply as a privilege that provides an academic advantage,” said ASA

Report speculates without any proof

The report speculates without any proof that it was the fear of this being exposed that was responsible for suicidal thoughts in Rohith Vemula. Despite his stellar academic record, the report tries to character assassinate Rohith by portraying him as someone more interested in politics than studies.

The final report with glaring inaccuracies, falsehoods and purposeful omissions made a mockery of the eight-year struggle for justice against the institutional murder of Rohith Vemula, said ASA. Alleging that the investigating officers had willfully neglected their duties to be performed under the provisions, which is tantamount to an atrocity under SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act, with incorrect framing of the statement of the complainant, ASA appealed to the Congress government of the state of Telangana to ensure that justice prevails.
