HYDERABAD: Harassment of girls and women on public roads is emerging as a major concern in Yousufguda, Shaikpet and nearby localities, with several recent incidents reported near Krishna Kant Park.

Women report repeated harassment near park stretch

Two incidents over the past week have alarmed regular commuters. On September 20, around 6am, a man on a two-wheeler allegedly touched a young woman walking to a temple near Krishna Kant Park and behaved in an obscene manner. She shouted for help and the rider fled.

On September 21, around 9pm, another girl heading home from the nearby vegetable market was similarly harassed by a two-wheeler rider. Residents said several such cases go unreported.

Residents seek CCTV expansion, stronger patrolling

Despite heavy movement of women and girls, only two closed-circuit cameras cover the stretch from Sai Baba temple to the main gate of the dumping yard. These were installed under Phase 2 of the L&T project but have not been fully brought into use, residents said.

Women who visit the park daily have urged authorities to install more cameras and increase police patrolling from 5am to 8am and again from 7pm to midnight.

Police said they identified and detained one accused based on CCTV footage and produced him before court on Sunday. A search is on for the suspect in the second case.

Dark zones in Shaikpet add to safety concerns

Janakamma Thota, close to Krishna Kant Park, has turned into a gathering point for miscreants who allegedly drink on the roadside and create a nuisance. Residents said the isolated and poorly lit area needs stronger patrolling.

In Shaikpet, similar complaints have emerged from Errakunta, Sakkubai Nagar and vacant plots around the locality. Miscreants reportedly remain on the Errakunta–Maruthinagar Colony route until midnight, harassing women passing through. People also reported drinking and consumption of ganja inside the park area near the tank bund, where streetlights remain defunct.

Women in Ambedkar Nagar said the stretch from the cremation ground to the settlement has no functioning streetlights. They appealed to police to increase patrolling and urged Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation officials to repair lights and install CCTV cameras.
