Hyderabad to get new sewer system with Rs. 17,212 crore investment
Hyderabad: In a bid to enhance the city’s infrastructure and address ongoing sewer issues, the Telangana Government is planning a major Sewer Network Project for Hyderabad, with an estimated total cost of Rs. 17,212 crores. This initiative aims to overhaul the existing sewerage system across various regions, including peripheral circles and core city zones, as outlined in Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) prepared by M/s. Shah Technical Consultants, Mumbai, under the Comprehensive Sewerage Master Plan.
The project is divided into several packages for the peripheral circles. The package I covers Uppal, Kapra, Malkajgiri, Alwal, and Serilingampally, totaling 756.85 km of proposed sewer lines. Package II encompasses Rajendranagar and L.B. Nagar, with a length of 643.29 km, while Package III includes Kukatpally and Quthubullapur, covering 831.78 km. In total, the peripheral circles will see a sewer network of 2,231 km.
For the core city, work is currently in progress for Zone III, and proposals for Zone II are in the tendering process. Additionally, proposals for Zones I (81 km), IV (92 km), V (77 km), and VI (174 km) bring the total proposed length for the core city to 424 km, resulting in a comprehensive sewer network of 2,656 km.
Moreover, the Sewer Network Project for the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) aims to address the sewer needs of the Outer Ring Road (ORR) Urban Local Bodies (ULBs). There is currently no adequate sewerage collection network in these areas, as former small municipalities laid the existing lateral sewers. This project will involve refurbishing the sewer system by installing new lateral sewers, branch sewers, and trunk mains to prevent sewage flow into nalas. The total proposed length for this initiative is 4,378 km.
The overall project cost for the core city, peripheral circles, and ORR ULBs is estimated at Rs. 17,212 crores.
