Woman dies after alleged illegal abortion in Telangana’s Jangaon; three arrested

JANGAON: A woman died after suffering excessive bleeding following an alleged illegal abortion in Telangana’s Jangaon district. Police have booked three people in connection with the case, including on charges of murder.
Third pregnancy allegedly ended after foetal sex determination
The victim, Sravani, was pregnant with her third child. She and her husband, Bhaskar Goud, have two daughters.
According to local reports, Sravani’s mother, Shobha, contacted a Rural Medical Practitioner (RMP), Sravan, who allegedly took Sravani to a hospital in Hanamkonda. Investigators suspect that the sex of the foetus was determined during the visit, in violation of the law.
Abortion allegedly performed at Sanjay Nagar
Police alleged that after the foetal sex was identified, Shobha and Sravan took Sravani to Sanjay Nagar, where an Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM), identified as Anasurya, allegedly terminated the pregnancy on July 21.
Sravani reportedly developed severe bleeding after the procedure. Her condition remained critical for several days before she died on July 25.
Police invoke provisions of PNDT and MTP laws
Police have arrested Anasurya, Sravan and Shobha in separate cases linked to the incident.
The investigation is also examining alleged violations of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act and the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, apart from the criminal case registered over Sravani’s death.
