Why Adivasi Sericulture Has Triggered a Forest-Horticulture Row in Mancherial
HYDERABAD: The horticulture department has strongly opposed the forest department’s alleged move to stop Dasali Pattu (sericulture) cultivation by Adivasi farmers in Kavar Kothapalli village under the Kotapalli Forest Range in Mancherial district.
Tension erupted on Sunday after officials from both departments argued over the issue. The dispute began after forest staff allegedly stopped Adivasi farmers from continuing sericulture work.
According to horticulture officials, the department has promoted sericulture in the Chennur region for several years. They said it provides a steady source of income for tribal families. Therefore, they believe the activity should continue.
Forest department raises environmental concerns
However, forest officials said the silkworms are reared on Nallamaddi trees inside the Blackbuck Sanctuary. They argued that the worms feed on the leaves and may affect the trees’ growth. As a result, they imposed restrictions on the activity.
Horticulture backs tribal livelihoods
Meanwhile, the horticulture department opposed the restrictions. Officials said sericulture has supported Adivasi families for years and remains an important source of income. They added that the practice should continue in the interest of tribal livelihoods.
The dispute has now created uncertainty over the future of sericulture in the sanctuary area. Officials from both departments are yet to reach a common decision.
