HYDERABAD: The Telangana Human Rights Commission has recommended ₹8 lakh as additional compensation and suitable employment to the husband of a woman who died following a tubectomy at a government health facility in Wanaparthy district.

Government held vicariously liable for medical negligence

In its order dated January 6, 2026, in H.R.C. No. 2355 of 2018, the Commission held the Government of Telangana vicariously liable for medical negligence that led to the death of M. Lalitha after a tubectomy at a Government Community Health Centre in Wanaparthy district.

The Commission, headed by Justice Shameem Akther, found that an ileal perforation during surgery and a delay in its detection resulted in septic peritonitis and subsequent cardio-pulmonary arrest. It rejected the contention that the death was due to mere physiological complications.

Earlier ₹2 lakh relief termed inadequate

The Commission observed that the earlier payment of ₹2 lakh was wholly inadequate, particularly as the deceased is survived by a disabled husband and two minor children.

Taking these factors into account, it recommended payment of an additional ₹8 lakh as compensation. The Commission also advised the government to provide suitable employment to the husband to enable the family to live with dignity.
