Vittal Rao Nagar residents struggle with damaged road for over a year
HYDERABAD: Residents of Vittal Rao Nagar, near Durgam Cheruvu Road, say they have lived with a badly damaged, half-dug road for over a year. Civic authorities have not fixed the problem because of an ongoing dispute between departments over drainage work. As a result, the area’s only access road is unusable.
Praveen Puglia, a resident, said the problems started about a year ago when the SNDP (Storm Water Drainage Project) department began construction near Durgam Cheruvu Road. Meanwhile, they also dug up the road from a petrol pump toward Vittal Rao Nagar. Additionally, residents have shared photos showing large parts of the concrete road cracked, raised, and filled with muddy water at night. Debris, tree branches, and construction materials have been left on the roadside.
According to Praveen, old pipes from the digging were left across half the road for three to four months. During this time, residents and the local society kept asking the authorities to clear them. Even after the pipes were removed, the road was never properly fixed. As of four to five months later, it is still broken.
Half-fixed and left
Speaking to HyderabadMail, Praveen said the SNDP department now plans to dig further to extend the drainage up to Narayana School before fixing the road. If this plan continues, the problem could take two years or more to solve from when work first started.
Praveen said he has filed many complaints and stays in touch with officials, sending them photos of the damage. However, he said officials always respond that the road cannot be fixed until the SNDP department finishes its drainage work. Residents feel stuck between departments that cannot or will not work together.
Records from the GHMC complaint portal show these problems. On January 31, 2026, a resident filed a complaint saying the roads had been bad for over a year and only a temporary fix was done during the last rainy season. The complaint also said the nearby Inorbit Mall road had been blocked for about a year. Another complaint from April 15, 2026, called the condition of Vittal Rao Nagar Road pathetic. It was marked closed but there was no sign of lasting repairs. The resident wrote, “Is this the road you want our pregnant wives and ailing parents to use, with so much dust and smell? Shame on the system that doesn’t fix things for years.”
Need solution
Praveen said about 50 flats in his society, plus other homes and businesses, rely on this road every day. In his words, “My issue is simple. I live here, I use this road every day, and it should be a proper road. Simple, very simple,” he said.
Frustrated by the lack of action, Praveen also posted about the problem on the social media platform X. There, he tagged the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation, Commissioner Gummalla Srijana, and the Assistant Executive Engineer for Madhapur. In his post, he sarcastically said that road material was disappearing in patches because of monsters, while a nearby road got a new surface. He questioned why departments could not coordinate the drainage and road work after more than a year.

Additionally, he asked officials to build a proper footpath. He pointed out that the Supreme Court has said people have a basic right to walk safely on a good footpath, under Articles 21 and 19(1)(d) of the Constitution.
Residents want the SNDP department and CMC road wing to agree on a plan to finish the drainage work and then quickly restore the road for good. Otherwise, more partial digging and temporary fixes will continue to make the road worse, as has happened through two rainy seasons.
