V C Sajjanar warns influencers over fake lucky draws

HYDERABAD: Hyderabad Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar has warned influencers against cheating people in the name of “lucky draws”, saying strict action will be taken irrespective of their celebrity status.
In a post on X on Saturday, Sajjanar said several social media influencers were exploiting their online popularity to collect money from the public through fraudulent lucky draw schemes. He said popularity cannot be used as a cover to deceive people and warned of tough legal action.
The commissioner said some individuals who earlier promoted betting applications had now shifted to organising so called lucky draws after action was taken against illegal betting. Promising cars, expensive bikes, houses and DJ sets as prizes, they were luring people and cheating them, he said. Sajjanar also shared videos on X showing flashy promotions on reels that, he said, masked real-world fraud.
He said cases would be booked under the Prize Chits and Money Circulation Schemes Banning Act, 1978, against those involved in such schemes. Sajjanar made it clear that no one — whether film celebrities or social media stars would be spared from legal action.
Urging public cooperation, the commissioner asked people to immediately report any fraud being carried out in the name of lucky draws. Complaints can be made by dialling 100, sending details to the Hyderabad City Police WhatsApp number 94906 16555, or approaching the local police station.
He appealed to citizens to remain alert and not fall for inducements or misleading promises circulated on social media.
