Pubs reshape Vayupuri as residents flag noise, parking strain

HYDERABAD: The Armed Forces Officers Cooperative Housing Society (AFOCHS) in Vayupuri, set up in 1963 for retired Army officers, is witnessing rapid commercial activity as pubs and other outlets take over what was once a quiet residential colony.
Residents say colony losing its peaceful character
The 50 acre colony with 200 plots, which received an ISO award in 2019 for its liveability, has seen several pubs open in recent years. Residents said at least five pubs are currently operating, while two microbreweries are under construction.
They said loud music continues till midnight and narrow internal roads get overcrowded. “Youngsters enter the colony drunk and create a ruckus. There have also been instances of rash driving, putting the lives of senior citizens at risk,” former Air Force officer Shyamola Khanna said.
Parking crunch adds to traffic chaos
Residents said most pubs do not provide-for dedicated parking, forcing visitors to leave vehicles on the road. “While issuing licences, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation does not ensure that owners allocate parking space. Because most of the premises are used for commercial activity, the road has shrunk so much that we sometimes walk right in the middle of it,” said Mani Shishta, a retired doctor.
GHMC promises coordinated action
Officials of the corporation said all pubs in the area have valid permissions. “If any pub is found operating without clearances, action will be taken. Owners often flout parking rules. We will coordinate with the traffic police to resolve the issue,” said Zakiya Sultana, deputy commissioner of GHMC Malkajgiri.
