Vaibhav Suryavanshi Enters India T20 Squad
Hyderabad : Teenage batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi has earned a place in India’s T20 squad, while Suryakumar Yadav has lost both the captaincy and his place in the team.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India selection committee appointed Shreyas Iyer as the new T20 captain and named Tilak Varma as vice-captain. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar said Suryakumar’s poor form led to his omission from the squad.
Recent Form Raises Concerns
India won the T20 World Cup under Suryakumar’s leadership only a few months ago. However, his individual performances failed to meet expectations.
In his last 10 T20 International innings, Suryakumar scored 305 runs, including only two half-centuries. His highest score was an unbeaten 84 against the United States of America. He has not scored a T20 International century for nearly three years.
His last century came against South Africa in Johannesburg on December 14, 2023. Since then, he has struggled to produce major innings. Fans believe his prolonged dip in form has contributed to his current situation.
IPL Struggles Add To Selection Woes
Suryakumar also endured a disappointing Indian Premier League 2026 season. He scored 270 runs in 13 matches, with only one half-century and two ducks.
The contrast with the previous season was significant. In IPL 2025, he scored a career-best 717 runs in 16 matches, including five half-centuries.
Although selectors publicly maintain that IPL performances are not the sole basis for national selection, Suryakumar’s struggles in the tournament appear to have influenced the committee’s decision.
Notably, before the T20 World Cup, selectors retained Suryakumar in the squad while overlooking Shubman Gill. His strong IPL performances had helped him retain his place despite inconsistent international returns.
Return Path Looks Difficult
Competition for places in India’s T20 side has intensified, with several young players attracting attention through their IPL performances.
Selectors now face difficult decisions over emerging talent. Against that backdrop, Suryakumar’s path back into the national team appears challenging.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s current form suggests he could make the most of his opportunity. At 35 and approaching the latter stages of his career, Suryakumar may require an exceptional turnaround to force his way back into the Indian side.
