Residents demand immediate cleanup of Upparpally Lake amid sewage, garbage crisis

Upparpally Lake Cleanup

Hyderabad: Upparpally Lake in Attapur is filled with garbage and contaminated by sewage water, making it heavily polluted and damaging the lakebed and ecosystem. The concerned authorities need to take immediate action to clean up the lake. If this is not done promptly, the lake and its surroundings will suffer significant damage, and the residents demand urgent attention to this issue.

While speaking to the Hyderabad Mail, an admin of the TG Citizen page and a responsible citizen who prefers to remain anonymous shared, “This is one of the largest lakes newly constructed under the previous government’s regime. Since then, it has been contaminated with sewage from a nearby gated community. Even the previous Chief Secretary, Somesh Kumar, used to reside in the same gated community. Looking at the current situation, nearby residents find it difficult to walk or visit this lake as it’s fully contaminated, emitting a pungent smell.”

Madhulika, an environmentalist, expressed deep concern about the state of Hyderabad’s lakes, which have been turned into garbage dump yards. She underscored the necessity of proper solid waste management to prevent the lakes from becoming choked with trash. Furthermore, she drew attention to the lack of legal protection for lakes, emphasizing that they are living entities. She called for the implementation of laws to safeguard these vital natural resources.

She emphasized the critical importance of protecting and restoring our lakes, highlighting that this responsibility falls on multiple departments, including the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Irrigation, Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB), Telangana Biodiversity Board (TSBDB), Forest, Fishery, Revenue, Health, local bodies, Tourism, and Education Department. It’s concerning to note that none of these departments effectively carry out their responsibilities in this matter.

Madhulika added that there must be criminal action taken against those responsible for the killing of waterbodies.
