UPC Volt AI-ready data centre investment announced in Telangana at WEF 2026

HYDERABAD: Netherlands-linked joint venture UPC Volt will set up a 100 MW AI-ready data centre at Bharat Future City with an investment of ₹5,000 crore, as part of Telangana’s push to emerge as a national hub for artificial intelligence-driven digital infrastructure.

MoU signed at WEF 2026, jobs boost expected

The memorandum of understanding was signed during the World Economic Forum 2026 after the ‘Telangana Rising’ delegation, led by chief minister A. Revanth Reddy, met the leadership of UPC Volt. The joint venture comprises UPC Renewables Group and VOLT Data Centers and focuses on building high-performance, energy-efficient AI data centres.

Project to integrate 100 MW renewable energy under green access

Under the proposal, the data centre will be supported by a matching 100 MW round-the-clock renewable energy facility, aimed at ensuring carbon-free power supply. The project will be integrated with renewable energy sourcing under Telangana’s Green Open Access framework, enabling what officials described as a sustainable, power-first operating model.

The investment, spread over five years, is expected to generate over 3,000 direct and indirect jobs during the construction phase and more than 800 direct and indirect jobs during operations, according to the proposal shared with the state government.

The delegation held discussions with Han de Groot, chief executive officer of Volt; Steven Zwaan, co-founder of UPC Renewables APAC; Alok Nigam, chief executive officer of UPC Renewables India; and Vikas Sharma, assistant vice-president of UPC Renewables India.

Revanth Reddy expressed satisfaction over the investment secured by IT and industries minister D. Sridhar Babu, stating that Telangana’s goal of becoming a $3 trillion economy by 2047 would be pursued through the creation of high-calibre digital infrastructure alongside a roadmap for net-zero development.

The IT minister said the state was aggressively positioning itself as a global AI data centre hub by offering incentives for high-density graphics processing units, large-scale training compute and advanced liquid cooling systems. He added that Telangana’s 2047 vision envisages three distinct economic zones focused on services, manufacturing and agriculture.

Revenue minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy and MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy were also part of the delegation that participated in the meeting.
