University of Hyderabad students protest against Chief Warden’s ‘Moral Policing’

UoH Student Protests Hyderabad

Gachibowli: Students at the University of Hyderabad have raised serious concerns about alleged moral policing and mismanagement by Chief Warden Suvashisa Rana, accusing him of targeting students while failing to address basic hostel issues.

According to the statement released by the Students’ Federation of India, University of Hyderabad(UoH) unit, the Chief Warden’s flying squad has been conducting controversial room raids, targeting students voicing concerns about hostel conditions.

The raids have sparked outrage among students, especially after incidents where students were reportedly videographed in their rooms without proper attire, raising privacy concerns. “Videographing students when they weren’t even fully dressed in their hostel room is attacking their dignity. This is attacking the private space of an individual,” added SFI in a statement.

Imposed Rs 30,000 fine for using kettle

Students are protesting hefty fines, including penalties of up to Rs. 30,000 for using kettles in rooms. They argue these penalties are excessive, given the lack of basic amenities like hot water dispensers and common kitchens in the hostels.

The deteriorating mess conditions have become a major point of contention. Students report declining food quality and increasing mess fees, while the administration has failed to establish mess committees or conduct hostel elections to address these issues at the local level. The absence of special meal provisions for sick students is also a concern.

The administration’s failure to provide essential facilities like common kitchens and hot water dispensers in every hostel has particularly affected students during illness, as they struggle to access basic necessities like hot drinking water.

Students are calling for the immediate resignation of the Chief Warden, SFI,UoH unit said, “The Inhuman, inefficient Anti-Student Chief Warden must resign immediately for the crimes he is committing in the name of flying squad. We appeal to the Student Community to Unite and Resist the Chief Warden’s flying squad team if they enter the hostel,” said SFI.
