Hyderabad: The University of Hyderabad (UoH) campus rocked with protests after the administration issued a notification for a new students’ union election, a move students are calling a unilateral and arbitrary dissolution of the currently elected body on Wednesday.

The decision, announced on September 10, 2025, has been met with fierce opposition from student groups and the existing union, which allege that the administration acted in bad faith without following due process.

The controversy stems from the administration’s move to dissolve the union before the completion of its stipulated tenure. According to sources, the current union had formally intimated the Dean of Students’ Welfare (DSW) about a schedule of remaining union activities yet to be completed.

“This is a complete subversion of democratic norms. The administration did not call for a University General Body Meeting, which is the proper procedure to discuss and decide on such a significant matter. They have arbitrarily cut short our democratic mandate to serve the student community,” said a student.

The tension on campus was further escalated when the university authorities, without citing any reason, closed the main gates during working hours, causing significant inconvenience to students and staff alike. Many students viewed this as a tactic to stifle potential protests and create an atmosphere of intimidation.

The administration’s notification cites the completion of the academic year as a reason for holding elections. However, opponents argue that this ignores the ongoing union activities and the prior understanding reached in the all-party meeting.
