Hyderabad experiences unseasonal rains on Christmas Day

Listen to Story

Hyderabad: Hyderabad saw unexpected rainfall on Christmas Day, December 25, 2024, with parts of the city experiencing light to moderate showers.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the day was marked by generally cloudy skies, with mist and hazy conditions in the morning. Light rain or drizzle was expected in several areas, while temperatures remained mild, ranging from a maximum of 26°C to a minimum of 21°C. Winds were reported as easterlies or south-easterlies, with speeds between 4-8 km/h.

The rain was light to moderate, affecting several parts of the city. This marked a rare occurrence of widespread rainfall on Christmas Day, which the Telangana Weatherman noted hadn’t been observed in the past decade.

Shifting Winter Patterns

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Telangana Weatherman pointed out the contrast between the winter weather in 2023 and 2024. “2023 winters were warm with fewer rainy days, while 2024 has seen cooler temperatures and more rain,” he stated, highlighting the shift in seasonal patterns. He also noted that daytime temperatures in most parts of the city did not exceed 22-23°C, which was cooler than usual for the time of year.

A Cool Christmas Day

Despite the light rain, the overcast skies and cool temperatures provided a refreshing atmosphere for the city. The weatherman described the day as “overcast, with the sun struggling to break through the clouds,” while micro-drizzles continued throughout the day. It was a typical winter day in Hyderabad, offering residents a chance to enjoy a warm cup of tea and Osmania biscuits.

The IMD’s forecast indicates that the weather will remain similar over the next 48 hours, with cloudy skies, misty mornings, and occasional showers.

The rainfall on Christmas Day in Hyderabad provided a rare weather event, with cooler conditions and widespread light rain, marking a shift from the warmer, drier winters of 2023.
