Tsunami SOP exercise Hyderabad

Hyderabad : Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) in association with National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) conducted a tsunami mock exercises to ensure the functioning of various communication channels and improve tsunami preparedness. Regular exercises are important for maintaining staff readiness for real events. This is especially true for tsunamis, which are infrequent but require rapid response when they occur.

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami, INCOIS proposes a national tsunami mock exercise on 5th November 2024, coinciding with World Tsunami Awareness Day.

The purpose of Tsunami mock exercise is to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of the National/State/Local Disaster Management Organisations (DMO), and other relevant authorities in responding to a potentially destructive tsunami. The exercise will provide an opportunity for DMO to test their operational lines of communications, review their tsunami warning and emergency response Standard Operating Procedures, and to promote emergency preparedness.

In preparation for the tsunami exercise, INCOIS organized the pre-exercise Workshop on ‘Tsunami Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)’ during 25-26 September 2024. About 40 participants from various National/State/Local Disaster Management Organisations, and media participated in the Workshop. The objectives of the workshop are to Familiarize Disaster Management Organizations (DMOs) of Coastal States/UTs with the tsunami bulletins issued by INCOIS and to Facilitate the improvement of their SOPs regarding tsunamis, and (c) Provide a briefing on the mock tsunami exercise.
