RR district: Video showing alleged misconduct by transgenders during bhumi puja goes viral

Hyderabad: Of late, transgender individuals and hijra community members, who make a living by dancing and singing outside households hosting wedding or birthday ceremonies, have become a ‘nuisance’ for citizens in Hyderabad.
Residents have been complaining that these groups, which may even comprise cross genders, often turn up uninvited at intimate family events like housewarmings or weddings and do not leave the place before they are given money.
While it is customary to offer them some money, locals allege that transgender individuals are demanding hefty amounts from the hosts and there are occasions when they resort to unruly behavior when refused.
Recently, an instance of harassment by hijra groups during a bhumi puja (groundbreaking ceremony) at Gurrampudi village of Ranga Reddy district, under the Rachakonda Commissionerate limits, has caused a stream of reactions on social media as the hijra group not only refused to leave when the hosts didn’t give them the amount they demanded, they also allegedly resorted to obscene gestures and hurled abuses at the organisers.
The video of the obscene gestures by a transgender has since gone viral. Responding to the inappropriate video on X (formerly Twitter), Rachakonda Police Commissioner tagged Meerpet police and directed the officials to take necessary action against those involved.
A few days ago, Meerpet police took seven transgenders into custody for allegedly causing public nuisance at multiple locations within the police station limits.
The operation was carried out by special teams formed by the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) in coordination with local police. Raids were conducted at several known hotspots, including RCI Road and Mandamallamma Crossroads. According to officials, the individuals were reportedly involved in indecent exposure and obscene gestures in public, leading to complaints of nuisance.
