Hyderabad: Telangana Junior Doctors Association (TJUDA) welcomed the decision of the court conviction, yet it called for a thorough investigation to identify and prosecute all accomplices involved and support for the victim’s family.

In a statement, TJUDA appreciated the Court’s decision regarding the heinous incident at RGKAR Medical College, West Bengal, that occurred last year. However, the conviction of Sanjay Roy marks a step towards justice. “We believe that this represents only a partial resolution. Such atrocious acts are rarely the result of a single individual. A statement from TJUDA read, “We urge a thorough investigation to identify and prosecute all accomplices, including those who facilitated the crime and any individuals or authorities who tampered with evidence.”

Furthermore, TJUDA urged the government to extend support to the victim’s family, acknowledging their suffering and providing appropriate relief. “We also ask the government and authorities to treat this tragedy as a wake-up call.” It is imperative to address systemic shortcomings by ensuring robust infrastructure, a secure workplace environment, and reforms that empower doctors to fulfil their duties without undue pressure or fear,” said Kommu Rahul, TJUDA president, in a statement.

It is pertinent to note that on 14 August 2024, TJUDA issued a strike notice. It got a positive response from higher authorities regarding the demands raised. Then, Supreme Court Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, citing patients waiting for hours for a few minutes of medical care in public hospitals and bystanders spending nights on the bare floor. He urged doctors to return to duties. Consequently, they called off the strike.
