Director Tahera brings ‘The Kite Runner’ play to Hyderabad stage

HYDERABAD: The acclaimed stage adaptation of Khaled Hosseini’s beloved novel, The Kite Runner, is set to enthrall Hyderabad audiences this weekend. Brought to life by Arena Theatre Productions and helmed by director Tahera, the play invites viewers on an emotional journey through friendship, betrayal, and redemption.
After captivating audiences in Bangalore and Mumbai, the production returns to Hyderabad for its 13th performance, once again filling the intimate Rang Bhoomi venue with its poignant storytelling on Saturday(November 8).
In an exclusive conversation with HyderabadMail, director Tahera shared her deep connection to the story. “I remember reading this story many years ago and always feeling that a few scenes could be a play someday. I never imagined I would land on the script and make this happen. It is a dream come true at this moment for me,” she revealed.
At its heart, the play traces the tangled bond between Amir, a privileged boy from Kabul, and Hassan, the loyal son of his father’s servant. As Afghanistan transforms around them, a single act of betrayal shatters their world, sending Amir on a lifelong quest for forgiveness that spans continents. Adapted from Hosseini’s bestselling novel, The Kite Runner is a haunting tale of friendship, the heavy cost of betrayal, and the enduring power of redemption, all set against the sweeping changes of a nation in turmoil.
Rang Bhoomi hosts a gripping staging of The Kite Runner
Bringing such an epic, emotionally charged story to the stage is a formidable task. Tahera notes the sheer scale of the production, with a cast of nearly 30. To breathe life into the text-heavy script, the team has woven in inventive storytelling, dynamic movement, abstract sequences, live music, and evocative lighting, all working together to immerse the audience in the world of the play.
Tahera emphasized the unique advantage of their Hyderabad venue, Rang Bhoomi. She believes the intimate space will draw the audience directly into the story. “The audience members are part of the story in every play that we do so far here, we try to involve the audience in some way.”
For those wondering what to expect, the director guarantees a moving experience. Describing the play as a “two-and-a-half-hour journey just like an Indian cinema,” she highlighted its universal emotional core. “It has all the values and roots that make it all the more enriching for them to come and watch the show. They’re going to be very, very moved.”
With Matthew Spangler’s adaptation, The Kite Runner continues its triumphant journey, inviting Hyderabad audiences to experience a timeless story of guilt and atonement, rendered with stirring passion and theatrical flair.
