TSRTC unveils e-bus expansion in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) unveils a large-scale plan to convert diesel buses into electric vehicles and expand its e-bus fleet in the city.
The corporation focuses on retrofitting ageing diesel buses into electric ones. Officials describe it as a first-of-its-kind initiative by a state-run transport utility in the country.
Tenders for the project were floated in September 2025 and firms were finalised. Sai Green Mobility will convert 200 buses, while Kalyani Powertrain Limited will retrofit nearly 40 buses.
Charging network expands across city depots
The RTC sets a target of inducting 2,800 electric buses within the Outer Ring Road limits by 2027. Authorities expect the shift to reduce private vehicle use, curb pollution and improve public health.
At present, 325 electric buses operate from six depots across the city. Another 175 buses are set to join the fleet this year.
Charging infrastructure is being expanded to 19 additional depots. Proposals have also been prepared for 10 new depots and 10 charging centres. The infrastructure development is estimated to cost ₹ 392 crore.
Pilot retrofit project proves model viability
A pilot project launched in 2023 saw a diesel bus from the Musheerabad depot converted into an electric vehicle. The bus now operates under the Uppal depot, demonstrating the viability of the retrofitting model.
