TGPWU submits suggestions to strengthen Telangana’s Gig Workers Bill

Hyderabad: Ahead of May 1, International Labour Day, the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU), in collaboration with the Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers (IFAT) and Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy (Vidhi), submitted detailed suggestions to the Commissioner of Labour, Telangana, on the recently released draft of the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers (Registration, Social Security and Welfare) Act, 2025, at his office on Monday.
Speaking on the occasion, Shaik Salauddin, Founder-President of TGPWU said that they welcome the Telangana government’s decision to recognise and protect gig and platform workers.
“Chief minister Revanth Reddy’s leadership in presenting this Bill as a ‘May Day gift’ to gig workers is historic. Our suggestions are aimed at strengthening the Bill to ensure it becomes a model for the rest of India and the world,” said Shaik Salauddin.
Elaborating on the submitted suggestions, the TGPWU chief said it reflects the collective insights of workers, trade unions, lawyers, civil society groups, and researchers. It also emphasises the need for strong rights for workers, algorithmic transparency, tripartite governance, and immediate, effective implementation.
“TGPWU remains committed to working with the government to ensure that the final legislation offers meaningful social security and welfare protection to all gig and platform workers in the state,” he added.
Recently, the Labour Department had drafted a bill focused on ensuring job security, insurance coverage, and basic rights for gig and platform workers. It is pertinent to note that around four lakh workers in Telangana are engaged in app-based services such as food and package delivery and ride-hailing.
Following a review meeting with representatives of gig workers, trade union leaders, and senior officials on April 14, 2025, the chief minister Revanth Reddy had suggested a few changes in the proposed bill.
