TGPWU Appeals to NHRC for Gig Workers

Hyderabad: Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) submitted a representation to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)regarding the rights and welfare of gig and platform workers.

Shaik Salauddin, Founder-President of the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU), said, “Several pressing issues affecting gig and platform workers were submitted to NHRC. These issues include the absence of legal recognition denying them basic protections like minimum wages and social security benefits. It also addresses concerns about economic exploitation through opaque algorithmic systems and high commission fees charged by platforms.”

The representation highlights unsafe working conditions and gender disparities in the sector. “Several key recommendations include establishing legislation to recognize gig workers as a distinct labor category and ensuring transparency. The proposals also call for essential benefits like paid leave and health coverage, along with workers’ right to unionize and engage in collective bargaining,” read the representation.

The recommendations emphasize the need for robust safety measures, including proper training and protective equipment. The representation advocates for independent grievance redressal systems and a tripartite committee involving the NHRC, unions, and platform companies.

“It is important to safeguard the dignity and rights of gig and platform workers, integral to India’s economic framework,” said Salauddin, urging the NHRC to proactively implement these recommendations at state and national levels.

Shaik Salauddin, Founder-President of the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) and National General Secretary of the Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers (IFAT), highlighted critical challenges facing workers in India’s digital economy in their representation to NHRC.
