TGHRC acts on fatal stray dog attacks

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Human Rights Commission (TGHRC), headed by Justice Shameem Akther, has taken suo motu cognisance of fatal stray dog attacks reported in newspapers on April 21, 2026.

Collectors asked to submit reports on incidents

The reports include The Hindu’s “3-year-old girl mauled to death by stray dogs”, Andhra Jyothi’s “వీధి కుక్కల దాడిలో చిన్నారి మృతి”, Eenadu’s “పొలాల్లోకి లాక్కెళ్లి చిన్నారిని పీక్కుతిన్న వీధికుక్కలు”, and Deccan Chronicle’s “Stray Dogs Kill 2 in Separate Incidents”.

The incidents involve the death of a three-year-old girl, Divya Behra, in Peddapalli district and a 36-year-old man, Ryakam Nagaraju, in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district.

The commission said the incidents, if true, prima facie indicate a violation of the right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution. It also noted possible negligence by local authorities and raised concerns over public safety and the vulnerability of migrant labourers.

Hearing scheduled for June 2, 2026

The TGHRC has sought detailed reports from the district collectors of Peddapalli and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri on the facts and action taken. The matter is posted for hearing on June 2, 2026, at 11 am.
