TGERC fixes power connection charges, relief for consumers

HYDERABAD: Consumers seeking new electricity connections in areas without existing power infrastructure, including residential colonies on the city outskirts, will no longer have to spend lakhs of rupees.
The Telangana State Electricity Regulatory Commission has fixed charges for erecting power infrastructure and distribution, bringing relief to domestic, non-domestic and agricultural consumers. The commission issued a gazette notification on Wednesday TGERC (Licence for Supply of Electricity on Request) Second Amendment Regulation, 2026 detailing the revised charges.
Fixed charges replace distance-based costs
Until now, Telangana discoms collected charges for setting up transformers, poles and other infrastructure based on distance from existing networks. In new residential colonies, these costs often ran into lakhs of rupees. Agricultural consumers were, in some cases, asked to pay for poles and transformers.
Under the new rules, domestic consumers will pay a fixed ₹500 for connections up to 1 kW. For loads between 1 kW and 5 kW, the charge will be ₹500 plus ₹600 per kW.
Revised slabs for higher loads
For domestic connections with loads between 5 kW and 20 kW, charges will be ₹2,900 plus ₹1,500 per kW. If the load exceeds 20 kW, the charge will be ₹10,000 per kW.
For non-domestic connections, the fixed charge will be ₹1,000 up to 1 kW. Loads between 1 kW and 5 kW will attract ₹1,000 plus ₹2,000 per kW. For 5 kW to 20 kW, the charges will be ₹5,800 plus ₹2,000 per kW.
Cap for agriculture connections
For agricultural connections, discoms can collect charges up to a maximum of ₹1,000 per kW from consumers.
The revised framework aims to standardise costs and ease the financial burden on consumers, particularly in the outskirts of Hyderabad, where new connections often required extensive infrastructure work.
