TGCSB warns shoppers against fake online sale offers

TGCSB arrests 7 cyber criminals in Rajasthan for involvement in mule account fraud

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has warned online shoppers to remain alert to fake sale offers used by cybercriminals to steal money and banking information.

The bureau said fraudsters were exploiting flash sales, seasonal discounts, clearance sales and exclusive online offers to target unsuspecting shoppers. They create fake websites, impersonate popular e-commerce brands and circulate misleading advertisements on social media.

Fraudsters use fake websites and misleading discount advertisements

Fraudulent shopping links are also shared through WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS and email, with products offered at unrealistically low prices, the bureau said.

Common methods include fake advertisements offering heavy discounts on branded products and websites designed to resemble genuine e-commerce platforms. Fraudsters also create social media pages promoting “Limited Time Sale” or “Stock Clearance” offers.

Some fraudsters seek advance payments through Unified Payments Interface (UPI), QR codes or direct bank transfers. Fake customer care numbers are also used to collect payments or obtain banking details.

Unusually low prices and urgent messages are warning signs

TGCSB advised shoppers to be cautious when prices appear too good to be true. Unverified websites, newly created domains and requests for payment outside an official shopping platform are among the major warning signs.

Other red flags include the absence of customer reviews or seller ratings and urgent messages such as “Only a few items left” or “Offer expires in 10 minutes”. Buyers should also be wary of sellers who insist on advance payment without a secure checkout process.

The bureau advised citizens to shop only through trusted and official e-commerce platforms and verify website URLs before making purchases. Shoppers should avoid clicking on links received through unsolicited messages and check seller ratings, reviews and return policies.

Citizens should not transfer money directly to personal bank accounts or unknown UPI IDs and should use secure payment methods provided by the shopping platform, it said.

Victims should contact banks and report fraud immediately

Those who fall victim to such fraud should immediately contact their bank and report the fraudulent transaction. They should preserve screenshots, payment receipts, order details and conversations as evidence.

Victims should report the incident through the National Cybercrime Helpline at 1930 and lodge a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal without delay.

“Cybercriminals exploit attractive discounts and limited-time offers to lure victims. If an offer appears too good to be true, verify before you buy. Think Before You Click. Verify Before You Pay,” TGCSB director Shikha Goel said.
