Telangana Cyber Security Bureau Advisory Warning Citizens About Holi Online Scams And Digital Payment Fraud

HYDERABAD: With Holi celebrations under way, the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has warned citizens about a spike in online scams and digital payment fraud during the festive season.

TGCSB Director Shikha Goel said cybercriminals are exploiting the surge in online shopping, party bookings, travel reservations and social media activity linked to Holi.

“Fraudsters are circulating fake discount offers on colours, gift hampers, event passes and food deliveries through WhatsApp, SMS, emails and social media,” she said.

Fake websites mimic genuine platforms

Officials said scammers redirect unsuspecting users to fraudulent websites that closely resemble genuine e-commerce platforms.

In many cases, fraudsters prompt victims to download malicious mobile applications. These apps can access sensitive data such as one-time passwords (OTPs), banking credentials and personal information. The criminals then use compromised accounts to target the victims’ contacts.

Cyber experts said the fraud often begins with festive greetings or promotional links. When users click on them and enter payment details or share OTPs, scammers siphon off money or misuse the data for further financial crimes.

Citizens urged to verify UPI IDs

The bureau advised citizens to avoid unknown links and not install applications from unverified sources. It also urged people to shop only on trusted platforms.

Officials asked users to enable two-factor authentication on their accounts. They also advised users to verify Unified Payments Interface (UPI) IDs carefully before making payments.

If fraud occurs, victims should immediately stop transactions and inform their bank or payment service provider. They should also preserve screenshots of suspicious messages.

Citizens can lodge complaints by dialling 1930, the national cyber fraud helpline, or by visiting the official cybercrime reporting portal.
