Tellapur Lakes Restoration

HYDERABAD: The Tellapur Neighbourhood Association (TeNA) called for immediate restoration and protection of the major lakes in the Tellapur region. A TeNA delegation met AV Ranganath, IPS, Commissioner of the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA), and submitted a detailed petition with their requests.

TeNA, representing more than 70 gated communities near Tellapur, highlighted the poor environmental condition of three key lakes, Mellacheruvu, Chelikunta, and Vanam Cheruvu. These lakes face severe pollution and ecological damage due to a lack of drainage systems, missing sewage treatment plants (STPs), and encroachment or blockage of natural feeder nalas.

During the meeting, TeNA appreciated HYDRAA’s proactive lake restoration work across the ORR region and expressed confidence that similar efforts will reach Tellapur to protect its water bodies. Furthermore, the association said the declining condition of these lakes threatens groundwater, biodiversity, and public health for thousands of nearby residents.

In light of these concerns, TeNA asked HYDRAA to start comprehensive restoration, including protecting feeder nalas, building proper drainage, installing and monitoring sewage treatment plants (STPs), and launching long-term conservation and beautification projects.

Speaking on the occasion, TeNA President Ramana Eshwaragari said that protecting lakes is essential not only for environmental balance but also for securing future water resources for the coming generations.

HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath assured the TeNA delegation that he would soon visit Tellapur to assess the lakes and drainage issues. The TeNA delegation included General Secretary Sudhakar Alladi, EC Member Deepthi Reddy, Pradeep, and President Ramana Eshwaragari. TeNA expressed hope that HYDRAA will take swift action and fully support restoring and preserving the lakes in Tellapur Division.
