Tellapur residents & Hyderabad cyclists hold protests for Kolkata doctor’s justice
Hyderabad: The residents of My Home Tridasa community in Tellapur organised a peaceful protest on the night of August 20, 2024, to express their solidarity and demand justice for a 31-year-old woman who was brutally murdered and raped at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9, 2024.
Many residents gathered with mobile torchlights, marching through the community to raise awareness about the tragic incident and promote enhanced public safety for women of all ages at workplaces. The protesters carried slogans to highlight the importance of addressing this sensitive issue.
Speaking with the Hyderabad Mail, Vijay Shetty, a resident of My Home Tridasa, said, “We, the residents of My Home Tridasa, took to the streets to demand public safety and justice for Abhaya, the Kolkata doctor. Our mobile torchlight march and slogans aimed to create awareness and show that we care deeply about this issue.”
The participants highlighted the need for vigilance and societal education on gender and sexuality. Vijay Shetty added, “The primary goal of our protest was to convey that we will no longer tolerate barbaric atrocities against women and children. This is a powerful message to our legislature, judiciary, and executive to ensure swift justice for the victims.”
The community also called on other groups and organisations to engage in similar awareness campaigns regularly, hoping to gradually change societal mindsets.
In a related event, the Hyderabad Cycling Revolution community gathered at ITC Kohenur on August 18, 2024, at 5:00 p.m., to protest the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata.
