Residents accuse illegal groundwater extraction in Tellapur
TELLAPUR: The Tellapur Neighbourhood Association (TeNA) has filed a complaint with the Sangareddy District Collector, alleging uncontrolled and illegal extraction of groundwater in the Osman Nagar, Ramachandrapuram area of Hyderabad.
Over the past month, residents of the Tellapur Neighbourhood Association have observed more than 200 heavy water tankers plying the Tellapur-Osman Nagar (Mayfair-Infinity) Road daily. The association alleged that the increased demand for water for commercial needs has prompted people to explore extracting water from ground resources.

Razhans Eshwaragari, President of the Tellapur Neighbourhood Association, said, “Frequent pumping of water from the ground without waiting for its replenishment leads to rapid depletion. Over the past year, with the increase in population, dependency on groundwater has escalated. Despite this, our Tellapur area residents still lack access to drinking water facilities, and the planning by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) remains confined to paper designs.
“We, the residents of Tellapur, are currently dependent on groundwater. However, with the over-extraction of groundwater, our living conditions are bound to deteriorate. We express deep concern about the issue of over-extraction of groundwater for commercial activities and urge the authorities concerned to take necessary steps to prevent further extraction of groundwater and to pursue legal action against the culprits, ” he added.
