Hyderabad: Telangana State Women’s Commission Chairperson Nerella Sharada visited the police torture victim in Shadnagar, Ranga Reddy district and assured her justice on Monday. Further she demanded a thorough investigation into the incident, strict action against those responsible, and measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

In a statement Chairperson Nerella Sharada said, “ The State Women’s Commission condemns the police’s brutal behavior towards a Dalit woman in a gold theft case”.Sharada inquired about the victim’s health and ordered that she receive free medical treatment. She expressed her anger over the absence of a female police officer while the woman was being arrested. The Commission assured the victim that the State Women’s Commission and the state government stand in support of her.

Further Chairperson Nerella Sharada met ACP Shadnagar NCH Rangaswamy who is investigating the case and demanded a thorough investigation into the incident, strict action against those responsible, and measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

It is pertinent to note that Five police officers from Shadnagar police station were suspended on Monday after accusations of torturing a Dalit woman, Sunitha, while she was in police custody. The Cyberabad Police Commissioner, Avinash Mohanty, suspended the Detective Inspector and five constables from the Shadnagar Police Station in relation to the allegations.

The alleged abuse occurred on July 28 when Sunitha, a 35-year-old from Ambedkar Colony, was brought in for interrogation regarding a property offense. The case was based on a complaint filed by Ubbani Nagender on July 24 about stolen cash and gold valued at 4.25 lakh.

Sunitha reported that she was severely tortured during her detention. “Police officers tied my hands and legs with ropes, then beat me with leather belts and pressured me into confessing to a crime I didn’t commit,” she claimed. She was released after that incident.

In response to the allegations, in a statement on Sunday, Avinash Mohanty, Commissioner Of Police,Cyberabad, said, “The DI of Shadnagar Rami Reddy has been attached to the Cyberabad Headquarters pending an inquiry into the allegations. ACP Shadnagar NCH Rangaswamy is conducting an inquiry into the incident. Further action will be taken based on the inquiry report”.

Following day, Avinash Mohanty released another statement that read, “In continuation of the departmental action regarding the incident at Shadnagar Police Station, the Detective Inspector of Shadnagar and five other staff members of the rank of constable have been placed under suspension. Further departmental action will follow.”
