HYDERABAD: The Telangana government has launched drone pilot training for transgender persons, marking a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country. The programme aims to improve employment opportunities through technical skill development.

The training was conducted at the Telangana Aviation Academy in Begumpet, where 16 transgender candidates completed the first batch. Participants were selected from districts including Hyderabad, Warangal and Karimnagar.

Technical training aligned with rising drone sector demand

The course covered drone flying regulations, pilot training, equipment assembly, spare parts handling and simulation. With increasing use of drones in agriculture surveying and industrial applications, the programme addresses growing market demand.

On completion, candidates received certification from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) along with academy credentials. This enables them to work as drone pilots anywhere in the country.

Shift from traditional skills to technical employment avenues

Earlier, transgender persons were largely limited to training in areas such as jute bag making, tailoring and driving. Officials said lack of specialised skills often restricted access to formal employment.

Recognising this gap, the Department for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Senior Citizens and Transgender Persons initiated technical training programmes. The focus is on equipping candidates with market-relevant skills.

Dinakar Devireddy, head of the Telangana Aviation Academy, said, “Drone pilot training requires technical expertise. We are glad to support this initiative. As it is a high-demand sector, we expect candidates to secure employment soon.”

Transgender persons have already gained recognition in sectors such as Metro services, HYDRA and traffic departments. Officials said they are now set to enter the drone sector as pilots.
