Telangana launches tourism police training at NITHM

HYDERABAD: A week-long induction programme for Telangana’s first-ever batch of 80 tourism police personnel began at the National Institute of Tourism and Hospitality Management (NITHM), Gachibowli, Hyderabad.
Organised by the Department of Tourism, Government of Telangana, the training aims to prepare personnel for deployment at major tourist destinations across the state. The course, titled Orientation and Sensitisation of Tourist Police, focuses on improving visitor experience, building capacity, and strengthening tourist safety.
Senior officers attend inaugural session
The inaugural session was attended by Mahesh M Bhagwat, Additional Director General of Police (Law & Order), Telangana Police, as chief guest. Other dignitaries included Prof V Venkata Ramana, Director, NITHM; M Ramana Kumar, Superintendent of Police; Prakash Ammanaolu, Chairman, FTCCI Tourism Committee; and D Ramachandram, Co-Chairman, FTCCI Tourism Committee.
Bhagwat said the initiative will help enhance tourist safety across Telangana, with police personnel deployed at major tourist sites in coordination with the Department of Youth Advancement, Tourism and Culture.
Prof Venkata Ramana highlighted NITHM’s commitment to capacity building and professional training for tourism development, adding that the effort aligns with the Chief Minister’s vision of projecting Telangana as a welcoming destination.
Deployment at nine key destinations
As part of the initiative, 80 police personnel from nine commissionerates will be deployed across:
Nagarkurnool (Somasila)
Vikarabad (Ananthagiri)
Mulugu (Ramappa)
Yadadri Bhuvanagiri (Rachakonda–Yadagirigutta, 10 personnel)
Yadadri Bhuvanagiri (Rachakonda–Pochampally, 10 personnel)
Nalgonda (Buddhavanam, 10 personnel)
Bhadradri Kothagudem (Bhadrachalam, 10 personnel)
Hyderabad Commissionerate (Hyderabad, 10 personnel)
The tourism police will assist visitors, maintain law and order, and facilitate public services at these destinations.
Telangana joins national and global network
Resource person D Ramachandram noted that Telangana has now joined 14 other states that have introduced tourism police. “Kerala was the first to launch the initiative in 2010. Across India, over 600 tourism police personnel are in service, and globally, around 60 countries have more than 20,000. Telangana now joins this elite group,” he said.
The programme covers training in soft skills, public guidance, emergency preparedness, communication, ethics, and cyber awareness. Sessions are being handled by NITHM faculty and experts from media, medical, sports, yoga, and communication fields.
