Telangana tops India in per capita income, RBI data shows

HYDERABAD: Telangana has emerged as the top-ranking major state in the country in terms of per capita income, according to the Handbook of Statistics on Indian States 2024-25 released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

RBI handbook ranks Telangana ahead of industrial states

With a per capita income of ₹3,87,623, Telangana has outperformed several industrially advanced states, including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Maharashtra and Kerala, underlining the state’s economic momentum.

Among major states, Telangana led the table ahead of Karnataka at ₹3,80,906, Tamil Nadu at ₹3,61,619, Haryana at ₹3,53,182 and Maharashtra at ₹3,09,340, as per the RBI data.

Dollar terms place state near upper middle-income mark

In dollar terms, Telangana’s per capita income stands at $4,295, which is significantly higher than the national per capita income of $2,777. The figure places the state close to the World Bank’s upper middle-income threshold, classified between $4,496 and $13,935.

Sharp rise in GSDP since state formation

The RBI data also shows a sharp rise in Telangana’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) since its formation. The GSDP increased from ₹5,05,848 crore in 2014-15 to ₹14,61,835 crore in 2023-24, and is estimated at ₹16,40,901 crore for 2024-25.

Telangana’s per capita income has seen a similar upward trajectory, rising from ₹1,24,104 in 2014-15 to ₹3,47,714 in 2023-24, before reaching ₹3,87,623 in 2024-25.
